“The Mandala is an archetypal image whose occurrence is attested throughout the ages. It signifies the wholeness of self”
C.G. Jung
The Mandala paintings are a series of watercolor and acrylic paintings that were created in the past several years. They are departure from my usual landscape derived works. The first mandala I made was done for an installation piece The Cosmic Cocoon created for the Burning Man event. Since that time I have used the practice of drawing mandalas to center myself and shift my focus in the creative process. They are an active form of meditation for me.
To begin these paintings I use a process of layering washes and splashes that imply a passage of time and create a three dimensional atmosphere. In drawing the mandalas and defining the many spatial layers I am searching for the still points in the chaos. Yet nothing is ever really still. There is a journey for the mind's eye in these paintings.
